Дебютный и самый успешный альбом Бобби Калдвелла. Изначально пластинка вышла без названия, только с указанием исполнителя на обложке. Но в маркетинговых целях её вскоре переиздали одноименно с названием главного хита, а ХИТ альбома это конечно же “What You Won’t Do For Love”, сэмплировавшийся более 9000 раз:) Рэпперы сразу же узнают в ней трэк Тупака – “Do for Love”. Кстати, коллекционное издание сингла “What You Won’t Do For Love” было издано на красном виниле в форме сердца! Так что, счастливые обладатели сорокопятки Mayer Hawthorne – Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out 2009 года (тоже изданной в форме сердца) – это идея отнюдь не нова 🙂 Ещё из ключевых песен альбома стоит выделить душевный поп-медляк My Flame (сэмплированный Notorious B.I.G. в Sky’s the Limit) и отличное соул-рнб Can’t Say Goodbye.
ps. Кстати а мальчик то белый! Признаюсь, этот факт меня очень удивил! По голосу и музыке Бобби не возникает никаких сомнений в черных корнях певца. Пластинка и издавалась с прицелом на черную аудиторию и рнб чарт. Поэтому конспираторы с лэйбла “Clouds” сделали таинственную обложку с силуэтом развязно сидящего человека в сутенерской шляпе на фоне закатного солнца. И то, что он белый всплыло только на концертах 🙂
This is a re-release of the album originally titled, simply, “Bobby Caldwell.” It was released with little fanfare on the Clouds label. But the album had a major crossover success on board. Thus, the change in title. “What You Won’t Do…” was like a bolt out of the blue. No one had really heard of Bobby Caldwell before that. What You Won’t Do For Love is arguably one of the most memorable and slickest slow jams to have come out of the 70’s. The song became a staple of Old Skool and Quiet Storm radio stations. While the original song still receives frequent airplay today, it has been covered, re-made (once, in 1998, by Caldwell himself) and sampled many times since 1978. Phyllis Hyman for her Living All Alone album, Go West’s version rose high in the adult contemporary charts, and Boyz II Men’s version in 2004, Tupac Shakur’s “Do for Love,” which samples the lyric, also attained a good deal of popularity. Goldie covered it on his 1998 EP Ring of Saturn (the lyrics were sung by Diane Charlemagne), In 2007 it was given a funky house makeover by Central Avenue featuring Simon Green.
What’s really nice about this album is that all of its songs are of high quality. “My Flame” was a fine follow-up, which deserves to be played during Quiet Storm hours, but is sadly overlooked. “My Flame” was covered by actress/singer Vanessa Williams for her 1999 Greatest Hits CD and also sampled by Bad-Boy recording artist The Notorious B.I.G. and integrated into the song Sky’s the Limit; which was also another major Rap/Hip-Hop hit. Another version is to notice from Ricky Peterson in the 1990s.
